With Summer Slam less than a week away Monday night Raw aired gave the sense of a PPV on the horizon, with some vintage names from the ring appeared to join in on the birthday celebrations of hall of famer Hulk Hogan, as well as head on collisions between those featuring in the matches this coming Sunday.
Started with Brock Lesnar
The night stared off with Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman taking the centre of the ring, with Heyman divulging his prediction for the upcoming main event of Summer Slam. Featuring the aforementioned Lesnar taking on current WWE Champion John Cena, Heyman showcased his usual genius on the mic, with his usual blend of mockery and sarcasm directed at Cena and the fans. Tearing into both as well as waxing lyrical about his star client, Heyman managed to draw a great reaction from the crowd with is promo, whilst hyping up the match better than most could.
Much of Raw featured this theme, mostly promoting the upcoming matches for Summer Slam. The Stephanie McMahon Brie Bella feud was another main focus of the show again, perhaps to its detriment, considering the build-up throughout the month coming from this on-going feud. The main thing on show here is that Stephanie is very much the star of this feud, giving what would be another boring Divas feud something different, which is always nice when the WWEs female talent are involved, no offense intended!
The former members of The Shield were involved in respective matches, again the main focus being this weekend’s PPV. Reigns continue his feud with Randy Orton and the rest of The Authority, whilst Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose come to blows again, in a funny moment involving the classic hide in the present routine, tried and test yet always a classic. Rollins and Ambrose are working towards creating what could be match of the night.
Hogan’s Birthday
AS mentioned earlier the segment with Hogan and some of the old boys was clearly the highlight of the show, giving us proof that WWE can give us a good show when it suits them. Hogan was treated to a standing ovation as he enter, and with all the locker room applauding him on he made is way down to meet with the number a famous old stars that had dropped by the give the celebrations that true feeling of being a special occasion.
With famous ring announcer Gene Oakland introducing the Hulkster, the Hall of Famer spent no time working the crowd well and before you know the roll of honour proceeded, including the likes of the great Ric Flair, Rowdy Roddy Piper and NWO teammates Kevin Nash and Scott Hall.
What was appearing to be mini hall of fame gathering with classic catch phrases and a good old rendition of happy birthday, changed quickly when man of the moment Brock Lesnar marched down to the ring, with Heyman in tow, mean mugging everyone in sight before setting his sights firmly on the birthday boy. Enter John Cena to save the festivities from taking a potential sour turn, with his presence was enough to steer of Lesnar away, setting things up nicely for Sunday’s showpiece.
