CORVALLIS, Ore. –The fourth-ranked Oregon State baseball team’s four-game winning streak ended on Saturday afternoon when the Beavers and Wright State split a non-conference doubleheader before a crowd of 2,407 at Goss Stadium.

The Beavers (8-3) won the opener 6-4 behind junior lefty Jace Fry. Wright State (3-7) took the nightcap 6-2 by scoring once in the seventh inning and three more times in the eighth. It was the first-ever win for the Raiders against Oregon State and it ended their five-game losing streak.

Oregon State stranded 10 runners, left the bases loaded twice and had just one hit in the final seven innings in game two. An RBI double by Gabe Clark and a run-scoring single by Andy Peterson gave the Beavers a 2-0 lead in the second inning but from that point on they were handcuffed by Wright State starter Robby Sextonand reliever Andrew Elliott.

Sexton struck out six, recorded 10 fly-ball outs and escaped two bases-loaded jams unscathed for his first win after two losses. Elliott finished up with two perfect innings.

A two-run single by Wright State’s Joe Ford tied the game 2-2 in the third and neither team scored until the seventh. At that point, the Raiders snapped the tie with an unearned run and they added three insurance runs in the eighth inning off three Beavers’ relievers.

Clark’s double was Oregon State’s lone extra-base hit and no Beaver had more than one hit. Scott Schultz (2-1) allowed five hits and two earned runs in his third consecutive quality start, but he suffered his first loss of the season.

Sean Murphy and Brad Mocciocci had two hits each for the Raiders. Mocciocci’s two-run, bases-loaded single in the eighth broke the game open, giving the Raiders a 5-2 lead that Elliott ably protected.

In the opener, right fielder Dylan Davis’s two-run, two-out, bases-loaded single in the sixth inning snapped a 1-1 standoff and sent the Beavers on their way to their fourth win in a row. Trever Morrison’s single and consecutive walks to Kavin Keyes and Michael Conforto, all with two outs, set the stage for Davis’s heroics.

Fry (2-0) allowed two runs and seven hits in 8.1 innings, his longest outing since 2012. He struck out two, walked one, threw 62 strikes in 96 pitches and lowered his ERA from 3.86 to 3.22. Schultz got the final out for his first save after the Raiders scored three times in the ninth to draw within 6-4.

Oregon State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Caleb Hamilton scored on Peterson’s safety squeeze. Wright State tied the game briefly in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Michael Timm but the Beavers went back ahead to stay in the bottom half on Davis’s key hit. The two RBIs gave Davis the team lead with 15.

Davis singled three times and drove in two runs. Hamilton added two singles and two runs; Peterson had two hits and an RBI; Tyler Mildenberg singled twice and added his first career RBI, and Morrison singled twice and scored to pace a 15-hit attack. Conforto doubled, singled, walked, was hit by a pitch and reached safely in four of his five plate appearances.

Oregon State now leads the all-time series 4-1. The Beavers won single games in the 2006 and 2011 NCAA tournaments, and the first two of this year’s four-game set, which concludes at 1:05 p.m. Sunday at Goss Stadium. Senior left-hander Ben Wetzler, whose 11-game NCAA sanction ended after Saturday’s second game, will make his 2014 debut as Oregon State’s projected starter. Wright State’s probable is TBA.
