We had the privileged to cover the Harlem Globetrotters on their trip here in Portland at the Moda Center. We were curious to see what the turn out was for this game especially since it was the 2 pm game on a Saturday…to our surprise it was pretty much a packed house. All the years I’ve spent in Portland I’ve kept hearing how Portland just isn’t a sports city, there’s always too much to do; but with the success of the Oregon Ducks & the Portland Timbers and now the recent success of the Trail Blazers, Portland is starting to feel like a sports town. I lived in Chicago my whole life and moved to Portland 13 years ago; in Chicago you would always start up a conversation with “did you see the game last night?”.
Globetrotters Extremely Skilled
Back to the Globetrotters, it was a great show. I’ve seen them on TV over the years & I grew up watching them on Saturday morning cartoons; but how would todays little boys and girls take it it. So I brought my son along to get his reaction, would it be enough to get his nose out of his tablet and stop playing Mindcraft…the answer is a big YES. Players were definitely extremely skilled, plus the show was enjoyable to watch. The Trotters do a lot of things to mix it up and not make it the same ordinary basketball game, trick shots, 4 point shots, hot-hand jerseys and so much more.
Globetrotters against NBA All-Stars
We even talked about how we would love to see an NBA team play a Trotters team and see how things turn out. With All-Star weekend just finishing up and all the talk of what can the NBA do to save the All-Star weekend? I’ll be honest, I would love to see a pool of NBA players play against the Trotters with the Trotter’s rules; the 4 point shots and everything else. I really think a lot of people would tone in and see exactly what the outcome would be. I think these guys would all play with an edge…can the Globetrotters with a group of guys that weren’t give a chance in the NBA bet some NBA All-Stars?
Great Event in Portland
So if you’re in Portland and have a little one that you want to try and pry away from the game system…take them to a Harlem Globetrotters game. Well worth the money & family time is priceless. At the end of the game kids also get a chance to get autographs from their favorite Globetrotter.
